'I was really happy to have him produce on this record,' Lavigne says of Sum 41's Deryck Whibley.
By Jocelyn Vena

This week, Avril Lavigne released her new album, Goodbye Lullaby, an emotionally charged record that will leave some fans wondering just who she is singing about. With a highly publicized divorce from Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley and equally highly publicized romance with "Hills" star Brody Jenner, Lavigne says that she doesn't really care if fans are trying to decode her songs.

"At this point, because I've been doing this for 10 years, I've kind of learned ... my life lesson has been about not worrying about people and what they think," she told MTV News. "Obviously I care. I want people to like my music and stuff. I've had to learn to really focus on myself: who I am, what I want ... You don't want to have distractions, especially when you're being creative."

Lavigne's ex-husband Whibley worked on many of the album's tracks. And considering how well the former spouses get along, the spunky pop star doesn't seem bothered by public speculation about her personal life. "I respect Deryck so much as an artist, and he produced several songs on this record," she explained. "I mean, he's in a really cool band, he's a writer and he's a rocker."

Whibley's skills and the duo's easygoing nature are what helped make magic happen in the studio. "He's a musician. He does it all, and to have him come on this album and produce and mix, it's like he's so talented, I was really happy to have him produce on this record," she added. "He did a really amazing job. We're great friends and I'm grateful for the relationship."

British singer/songwriter says he was surprised by 'how cool' Swift is.
By Jocelyn Vena

If you still don't know who 21-year-old British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran is, then you might want to bone up. The folkie up-and-comer is already being embraced by some of the biggest pop acts on the planet as he launches a full-on U.S. invasion of his own.

Having already worked with the boys of One Direction on their album Up All Night, he revealed he's going to work with the guys again later this summer as they prep their sophomore release.

"I wrote a couple of songs when I was 17 that One Direction want for their next album," he said, via Perez Hilton. "I'm going into the studio in August to produce the tracks for them."

In addition to working with the British boy banders, he also recently hit the studio with Taylor Swift, as she prepares her follow-up to Speak Now, her smash 2010 release.

"It's such a pleasure to have people like her in the music industry — she has the talent and is so down to earth, head and shoulders," he told Pop Crush, adding that he was surprised by "just how cool she was."

He went on to say that he was taken aback by her maturity when they hit the studio together. "I've never really met acts like [her]. You meet people like Elton [John] who have been in the game for 30-40 years who are wise and old and been at it for a long time — and Taylor's been in it for six years and she's 22," he explained. "And you hear horror stories about younger musicians who kind of go a bit off the rails, but she's so together and so kind of professional and knows what she wants, but ... isn't too harsh — she's just a really sweet gentle person — so yeah, that's what surprised me, is that she was sound."

Sheeran recently dropped his own debut album, +, Stateside, where he landed at #5 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart.

It was a fab times in the Hamptons last night at Russell Simmons' East Hamptons estate as 13th annual Art For Life benefit was in full effect. And despite the rain, celebs came out to help raise over $2 mill for art programs!
If you caught our Twitter timeline last night, you saw our play by play action as YBF was on the scene. Now check the official pics inside...
Honorees Nick Cannon & Mariah Carey helped raise millions last night at Art For Life. MiMi was pretty in pink as both Russ and Nick kept it Hamptons preppy in pastels and a mix of prints.
Also honored last night were Grant Hill and fab wife Tamia, who rocked a dipped hem colorful strapless frock from Aidan Maddox.
The whole Simmons fam posed for a pic on the red carpet--Uncle Danny, Angela, Ming, Russell, little Miley, Aoki, Russey, Justine & Rev. Run.
Aww look at little Miley!
Angela rocked a really cute look as well in her Virgos Lounge dress.
Ming & Aoki looked too cute...and they're growing up before our eyes. Ming is indeed Kimora's mini me.
The Rev snapped some pics inside with Rocsi and Trayvon Martin's mom Sybrina and Trayvon's brother.
Diggy performed for his uncle's event of course.
Soledad O'Brien served as a host for the evening.
Former "The Wire" star Michael K. Williams was there in his Hamptons best.
Melanie Fiona rocked a cute colorful look. Mel performed and posed it up with another performer of the night, Ms. Anita Baker.
Diggy posed with his uncles on the red carpet before hitting the stage.
Rocsi also spent some time on the carpet.
MC Lyte made her way to the event to support.
Kevin Liles and wife Erika looked excited to be there.
Producer geniuses L.A. Reid and Babyface posed for a shot.
And Salt-N-Pepa were on hand to perform.
And a few twitpics we came across:
Salt, Pep & MC Lyte shared a photo. While publicist Marvet Britto also shared a photo with the fabulous Ms. Baker.

Mother Monster blasts track on the streets of the Big Apple for fans gathered around her SUV.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga was in her hometown on Sunday night and gave her fellow New Yorkers a special treat. Sitting in her car, she played a new track off her forthcoming album for gathered fans.

In barely audible footage posted online, the dance track plays in the background — the majority of what is heard in the video is the club-banging beat. Gaga sits in the backseat of an SUV as fans call the track "amazing." The 38-second clip ends with the Mother Monster driving away from her fans.

Shortly after the encounter, fans began tweeting about meeting the singer and getting the preview. She was playing a song from her new album! ... It was a very heavy dance/club song! The beat was f---ing insane!"

Another person who was there said that the song might end up being the first released off Gaga's forthcoming album. "I asked her if it was the new single she looked at me and shook her head yes and said shhhhh," the fan tweeted.

Gaga will reveal the name of her new album in September. Last week she hinted that the first song off the LP is produced by longtime collaborator DJ White Shadow, who worked with Gaga on Born This Way singles "Born This Way" and "The Edge of Glory."

While fans might have to wait a little longer to hear more of this new track, Gaga has been playing a song called "Princess Die" while on tour. If this new untitled track is any indication, Gaga is focusing on making pure dance music, something she implied while out on the road.

"Let's just say I feel, I feel that when I wrote Born This Way, I demonstrated a sense of maturity," she said. Eminem's explanation like 'a scientist,' Ice-T tells 'RapFix Live' about his new documentary, 'Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap.'
By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Ice-T dug deep into his rolodex to bring out all-stars while filming his new documentary, "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap." The film, which opened in theaters Friday, includes appearances from legends like KRS-One and Melle Mel, to current powerhouses like Dr. Dre and his protégé Eminem.

During his recent visit to "RapFix Live," Ice-T discussed the process of putting the film together, explaining that Dr. Dre and Eminem both made important contributions to the finished product. "Dre says, 'You've gotta write me a song. I don't need bars — I know you've got skills, but we need songs, so give me the hook first.' He says a lot of rappers get lost, but that's what Eminem does. They write these incredible songs, and that's basically what Dre likes to take to the marketplace."

In the documentary, Ice-T also links up with Eminem in the studio, where the Detroit native explains that being a white rapper forced him to work harder to prove himself. Of the Shady Records CEO's explanation of his complicated rhyme scheme, Ice said, "It was like you were listening to a scientist."

Learn how more of hip-hop's greatest MCs craft their rhymes in Ice-T's informative documentary, "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap," in theaters now.

Celebs in L.A. kicked off their weekend with some shopping, lunch dates, and hitting the town. Check out Ron Artest out to lunch with his girlfriend Shin Shin (Gao Xinxin), Meagan Good hitting the town with her friends and Nia Long doing some shopping inside...
Laker baller Ron Artest made it known last year that he and (ex) wife Kimsha have been "divorced for years", so he's been toting around his girlfriend Shin Shin everywhere he goes.
The twosome went to the Newsroom Cafe for some grub yesterday afternoon in Beverly Hills.
Well isn't that sweet.
Elsewhere in L.A., Meagan Good put on a new outfit and headed out in some leopard leggings and spiked boots.
The newlywed flashed her ring as she made her way to dinner at BOA with fam and friends.
Still fab.
And out and about yesterday in Beverly Hills:
Nia Long hit up the COACH Boutique for an obviously big purchase. The mom of two is looking laid back and casual these days. Such a fab chick.

'VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul' featured performances by Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Jessie J and many others.
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORK — Glittering clothes, big voices and sassy songs about love, loss and everything in between ruled the night during "VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul." The concert was filled with booty-shaking, sing-along performances from Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Jessie J and others, who rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom for the show, which aired Monday night (December 19) on VH1.

With an assist from the night's house band the Roots, it all kicked off with Hudson, Clarkson and Blige channeling the Supremes for "You Keep Me Hangin' On," before launching into a medley of their own tracks, "Spotlight," "Real Love" and "Since U Been Gone."

The performance set the tone for the night, which not only paid homage to the women in the room, both legendary and up-and-coming, but also the cities that birthed some of the most soulful songs in music history, including Chicago, London, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee.

Through the night, divas from all walks of life, including Erykah Badu, Estelle, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Martha Reeves, Marsha Ambrosius and Ledisi, as well as a few divos (Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy), sang some of the biggest hits from soul music's lush history. The set list included a sampling of tracks like "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox, "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers and "Ain't Nobody" by Khan herself.

When the cities themselves weren't being honored, the divas were, with solo performances that demonstrated the ladies' killer vocal prowess. Florence Welch, Clarkson, Sharon Jones, Jessie J, Scott, Hudson and Blige each took the stage to give some shine to their own tracks and pop styles, proving that soul music is a genre that is still alive and well.

The Amy Winehouse tribute was the culmination of the night. Although "VH1 Divas" was all about the living performers who belted out songs at the concert, the presence of one diva gone too soon was certainly felt. Instead of focusing on the loss suffered when the British songstress died over the summer, the show focused on a celebration of her music.

"What's up New York?" the tribute's MC, Nas, asked the room. "When the legendary Amy Winehouse sang about me in her song 'Me and Mr. Jones,' I was so honored. Amy Winehouse was my true soul sister." The two worked together on her Lioness: Hidden Treasures track, "Like Smoke." "I'm here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime," he added.

The presence of his "home girl" was felt in the room thanks to her game-changing music as reimagined by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (the latter of whom worked with her on her Back to Black album), Florence Welch and Wanda Jackson. The medley included her soul-killing breakup track "Back to Black" and her sassy anthem "You Know I'm No Good."

'It was a learning experience and it hurt my feelings, but I want to apologize to everyone that was offended,' singer says.

Nothing could have prepared Mary J. Blige for the firestorm of criticism that rained down on her in April when she appeared in a controversial Burger King ad that was panned for being tasteless. Nearly three months later, she's finally sharing her side of the story, admitting that she was "crushed" by the backlash.

The ad, intended to promote Burger King's revamped menu, found Mary on top of a table, belting out the ingredients to the Crispy Chicken Snack Wrap over the melody of her song "Don't Mind." The backlash was immediate. Hours after the ad appeared online, Burger King pulled it from their YouTube channel, later citing music-licensing issues. But it was clear from comments, tweets and Facebook posts why the clip really vanished.

In the midst of the chaos, Mary released a statement apologizing for the "unfinished" ad, but during a Thursday interview with NYC radio station Hot 97, she admitted how deeply the whole fiasco cut her.

"I just felt like there was no need for me to say anything, because everyone was crucifying me and going crazy," she said about remaining mum at the time. "I pulled back and watched everyone and everything, [because] it's just something that I thought would've been a great branding opportunity. I went online to listen to the remix that I did with Fat Joe, I'm looking for 'Another Round,' and all I could see is Burger King, chicken and buffoonery, and it just broke my heart.

"I understood the laughter and the jokes and the stuff that was happening — you're supposed to do that when something like that happens — but the thing that hurt me is when people were starting to say vicious, negative things that didn't have [anything] to do with that," she continued. "It exposed everyone and everything in my life and showed me who my friends are."

Mary said that a few people reached out with comforting words while she was "wanting to crawl under the bed," but she also took notice of those who tried to distance themselves from the project. "I had to go to the airport the next day, when it was hot off the press, and I just held my head up," she said. "It was a mistake and I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that. No one had mercy, and it's cool, it was a learning experience. It hurt my feelings, it crushed me for two days, but after those two days, I got up and I kept going. I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposely."
