Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me' offer 'took me off guard,' says Madsen, who also starred with MJ in 2001.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> tweeted that when he was looking for inspiration for his <a href="/news/articles/1690963/justin-bieber-as-long-as-you-love-me-music-video-premiere.jhtml">"As Long As You Love Me" video</a>, there was no one he wanted to <a href="/news/articles/1691049/justin-bieber-as-long-as-you-love-me-michael-jackson.jhtml">emulate more than Michael Jackson</a>.</P><P>Coincidentally, when he needed someone to play his foe in the clip, he looked no further than a guy who has some experience working with Jackson.</P><P>That man is Michael Madsen, who appeared in Jackson's 2001 gangster-themed video for "You Rock My World" off his <i>Invincible</i> album. Oddly enough, the only people that have ever really asked the hard-edged actor to appear in videos happen to be Bieber and Jackson.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Michael Madsen Has A Soft Spot For Justin Bieber" id="vid:822276" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"Hardly ever [am I asked to be in videos], that was why it was kind of funny cause that doesn't usually happen," he told MTV News. "It came out of nowhere. It was the last thing in the world I expected, to be called by Justin Bieber. It was kind of funny. It took me off guard. It's not the usual thing people think of me for, but considering the role, maybe."</P><P>In <a href="/news/articles/1690932/justin-bieber-as-long-as-you-love-me-video.jhtml">the video</a>, Madsen plays a tough guy who <a href="/news/articles/1691089/justin-bieber-michael-madsen-as-long-as-you-love-me-punch.jhtml">beats up Bieber</a> after the teen ignores his request to stay away from his daughter. It was that cinematic storyline that got Madsen interested.</P><P>"I didn't want to imagine myself on a trampoline with a lollipop, so I asked for the story. I realized it was almost like a film production; and of course, I kind of figured that it might be an interesting thing to do," he said about the Anthony Mandler-directed video. "I didn't know what to expect... I was surprised... They got me a good wardrobe. That was my shirt though. I brought my own shirt; those kinds of shirts are kind of rare.</P><P>"The story is so much Shakespearian; the couple, they run off together out the window," he later continued. "It's rather like that, I thought that was interesting. And I thought the kid, he had an enormous talent and he was very gracious to my sons and was very gracious to my family."</P><P>It was actually those sons that convinced the Hawaiian-shirt-wearing "Kill Bill" star to make the video with Bieber. "Well I was surprised at first that the kid was interested in having me be part of his video," he recalled. "I went to my sons and I asked my boys, I asked my sons what they thought if I should if they thought I should do it or not. And, of course, they gently placed their hand on my shoulder and said 'Dad don't you realize who Justin Bieber is?' And I said 'Well, no, actually I didn't.' 'VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul' featured performances by Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Jessie J and many others.

<P><b>NEW YORK</b> — <a href="/news/articles/1676212/vh1-divas-red-carpet.jhtml">Glittering clothes</a>, big voices and sassy songs about love, loss and everything in between ruled the night during <a href="/news/articles/1676205/vh1-divas-mary-j-blige-jessie-j.jhtml">"VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul."</a> The concert was filled with booty-shaking, sing-along performances from Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/florence_and_the_machine/artist.jhtml">Florence and the Machine</a>, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Jessie J and others, who rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom for the show, which aired Monday night (December 19) on VH1.</P><P>With an assist from the night's house band the Roots, it all kicked off with Hudson, Clarkson and Blige channeling the Supremes for "You Keep Me Hangin' On," before launching into a medley of their own tracks, "Spotlight," "Real Love" and "Since U Been Gone."</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:vh1.com:719296/cp~vid%3D719296%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Avh1.com%3A719296" width="430" height="243" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The performance set the tone for the night, which not only paid homage to the women in the room, both legendary and up-and-coming, but also the cities that birthed some of the most soulful songs in music history, including Chicago, London, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee.</P><P>Through the night, divas from all walks of life, including Erykah Badu, Estelle, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Martha Reeves, Marsha Ambrosius and Ledisi, as well as a few divos (Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy), sang some of the biggest hits from soul music's lush history. The set list included a sampling of tracks like "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox, "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers and "Ain't Nobody" by Khan herself.</P><P>When the cities themselves weren't being honored, the divas were, with solo performances that demonstrated the ladies' killer vocal prowess. Florence Welch, Clarkson, Sharon Jones, Jessie J, Scott, Hudson and Blige each took the stage to give some shine to their own tracks and pop styles, proving that soul music is a genre that is still alive and well.</P><P>The <a href="/news/articles/1676113/amy-winehouse-vh1-divas.jhtml">Amy Winehouse tribute</a> was the culmination of the night. Although "VH1 Divas" was all about the living performers who belted out songs at the concert, the presence of one diva gone too soon was certainly felt. Instead of focusing on the loss suffered when the British songstress died over the summer, the show focused on a celebration of her music.</P><P>"What's up New York?" the tribute's MC, Nas, asked the room. "When the legendary Amy Winehouse sang about me in her song 'Me and Mr. Jones,' I was so honored. Amy Winehouse was my true soul sister." The two worked together on her <i>Lioness: Hidden Treasures</i> track, "Like Smoke." "I'm here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime," he added.</P><P>The presence of his "home girl" was felt in the room thanks to her game-changing music as reimagined by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (the latter of whom worked with her on her <i>Back to Black</i> album), Florence Welch and Wanda Jackson. Britney Spears admits the other judges 'ganged up' on her when they disagreed with her critique of a contestant.

<P>"The X Factor" judges <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lovato__demi/artist.jhtml">Demi Lovato</a>, L.A. Reid and Louis Walsh, the British "X Factor" panelist who has been sitting in for Simon Cowell while he recovers from bronchitis, are in Kansas City, Missouri, as auditions for the second season of the reality singing competition continue. The group gave <a href="http://www.toofab.com/2012/06/11/britney-spears-x-factor-bizarre-auditions-exclusive-video/" target="_blank">their first interview</a> since Spears and Lovato were announced as judges at the Fox upfronts.</P><P>The judges discussed the "bizarre" performances they've seen, how they get along, whether Spears' and Lovato's careers as performers make them more sympathetic or critical of the contestants, and the one time everyone ganged up on Britney.</P><P>"I feel like we've had a little bit of bizarre performances overall," Spears said of the Kansas City performances. "Britney likes me and Demi likes me," he said.</P><P>Asked which judge the rest of the team tends to agree with the most, Reid said that Spears has the best eye for contestants that have that special something. "We tend to agree with Britney more than others. Honestly, I'm being funny, but she has amazing taste."</P><P>"You ganged up on me one time though," Spears quickly countered, half-jokingly. "You three guys did. One time, [and] it wasn't nice!"</P><P>"One time out of 75 auditions, that's not bad," Reid replied.</P><P>As for what makes Spears happiest when judging, she said, "It's the best feeling when someone comes onstage and just makes us want to stand up and gives us energy."</P><P>Having made their names as entertainers, both Spears and Lovato admitted that their careers have helped them relate to the contestants because they've "been in their shoes." But it's a double-edged sword because it has made both judges more sympathetic to the show's contestants, particularly when they have to deliver bad news.</P><P>"It's something I've definitely had to learn. At first, I really didn't even want to do it," Lovato said of having to criticize contestants. "It's easier to say, when you're having meetings with people, 'Oh yeah, it will totally come easy,' or something. But when I got in the seat and had to give negative criticism to somebody ... it sucks. But they're asking for your advice, and by stepping on that stage, they also know that you could not like their performance. They're taking a chance, and I'm going to take a chance by telling them something that I believe."</P><P>The interview comes on the heels of news that all four judges <a href="/news/articles/1687014/britney-spears-demi-lovato-x-factor-auditions.jhtml">walked off the set</a> after a disastrous audition in which a contestant — who reportedly wasn't a particularly talented singer — sang with his back to the panel. "It was really awkward," a source told <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20602844,00.html" target="_blank">People.com</a>. "They didn't want to waste their time."</P><P><a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20602881,00.html?xid=rss-topheadlines" target="_blank"><i>People</i></a> also reported that Spears is proving to be a tougher judge than many expected. A source told the magazine, "She's got a really good instinct, and when she loves something, she looks like she wants to dance on the desk. When she doesn't like someone, she is incredibly tough."</P><P>For her part, the pop star insists her firm stance is in the best interest of the contestants. "It's all tough love ... I promise!" Above the Buzz examines how these former pop princesses serve as examples of how stars can re-brand themselves again and again.

<P>Both <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/simpson_jessica/artist.jhtml">Jessica Simpson</a> dominated headlines this week. Not since the late '90s have these two duked it out for so much media coverage.</P><P>However there's a remarkable difference in what's happening today to what was happening then: Then, everyone was talking about their music and their pop star personas. Where Britney was a Lolita who proclaimed virginity while dancing provocatively in belly-baring tops, Jessica was innocent and sweet and didn't dare anger her minister daddy. Jessica released songs that put her big voice on display, and Brit focused on songs that put eyes on her dazzling dance moves and her ear for dance beats.</P><P>A lot has changes in the years since then. What's interesting is that, despite their seemingly different personalities, in retrospect, they have a lot more in common than was initially apparent: They are both down-home country girls who have built empires that few can touch. Both have had very public career highs met with very public personal lows. Both have loved <a href="/news/articles/1683993/boy-band-allegiances.jhtml">boy banders.</a> Both have even documented their lives on reality shows, albeit with very different outcomes.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="'We All Are Authentic'" id="vid:493178.id:1633959" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>With almost 15 years separating the women they are now from those girls they were then, it seems they are looking to change it up.</P><P>At a time where the pop world is filled with plenty of younger pop princesses looking for their time to shine, Britney and Jessica seem comfortable enough with their own musical legacies to let them all have their moments. And, they should be at ease. They have both been incredibly successful in that world, having sold millions of albums, had huge radio singles and made music that is uniquely their own. And while Simpson has let her music take a back seat to other projects in the past few years, Spears is still a working singer who sells out tours and tops the charts.</P><P>These days, Jessica seems focused on maintaining the post-pop star second act she launched several years back. She's a fashion mogul with a billion-dollar empire that has outfitted fashionistas with reasonably priced essentials like platforms and bags. She also judges up-and-coming fashion talent on NBC's "Fashion Star," sharing with new designers her own wisdom on breaking into the industry. But, always savvy enough to keep people guessing, she's expanded her brand even further.</P><P>Now, she is also the latest <a href="/news/articles/1684326/jessica-simpson-baby-beyonce.jhtml">mommy mogul</a>. Jessica just added another gig to her post-pop star career — that of the A-list mom. Just this week, she welcomed her first child, <a href="/news/articles/1684216/jessica-simpson-baby-girl-maxwell-drew-johnson.jhtml">Maxwell Drew</a>, into the world. We expect she'll use that experience to re-launch herself yet again. We should expect fashion lines for stylish toddlers. And who wouldn't want to see a reality show that follows the new mom and her family?</P><P>It seems that, like Simpson, Spears might be looking to take a break from music for a moment. Having already given birth to two sons and tried her hand at the worlds of fashion and beauty, Spears is now a frontrunner to <a href="/news/articles/1684320/x-factor-judges-miley-cyrus-britney-spears.jhtml">judge "X Factor."</a> Her own experiences in the industry certainly make her the perfect candidate to give advice on the ups and downs of pop superstardom. She's experienced both with the entire world watching. While Spears' other projects (clothing line, fragrances) have generally been overshadowed by her music career, this rumored gig might be the first one to take the attention away from her pop fame while using it for all it's worth.</P><P>Spears is probably up for the gig because she is basically the heir to the <a href="/news/articles/1681693/madonna-above-the-buzz-pop-queen.jhtml">Madonna legacy</a>. She truly understands how to be a pop star. And the rumors that she might join Simon Cowell on the show seem to be intriguing Spears' critics and non-devotees more than anything she's done in the past few years. Spears might have found her perfect next chapter.</P><P>Right now, it's unclear how these new career paths will shape the future for Simpson and Spears — musically and otherwise. But, as has always been the case for them, no one doubts they will redefine what it means to be a female pop star. They are women who aren't willing to go quietly into the night. Murray is asking appellate court to re-test a piece of medical evidence from his trial.

<P>The imprisoned cardiologist <a href="/news/articles/1673906/michael-jackson-conrad-murray-verdict-guilty-involuntary-manslaughter.jhtml">convicted of manslaughter</a>
 in the 2009 death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> filed a request on Monday to have a key piece of evidence in his trial re-tested. Dr. Conrad Murray is asking an appellate court to order a lab to authorize a forensic analysis on residue in a drug vial taken from the bedroom of Jackson's rented Los Angeles estate.</P><P>According to the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0731-murray-20120731,0,2898322.story" target="_blank"><I>Los Angeles Times</I></a> Murray's defense team thinks that the 100-milliliter bottle, which was a key piece of evidence at the 2011 trial that ended with Murray's conviction on involuntary manslaughter charges, could help lead to a successful appeal of the sentence.</P><P>Murray's fingerprint was on the bottle, which prosecutors said held the lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol that killed Jackson. Prosecutors had argued that Murray mixed a small amount of propofol with another anesthetic, lidocaine, in an intravenous drip and then left Jackson unattended.</P><P>Murray's defense team said the vial was in a bag of trash and was unrelated to Jackson's death, countering that the pop icon injected himself with propofol from a syringe while the doctor wasn't looking.</P><P>"If a forensic examination of the residue in Exhibit 30 revealed no lidocaine, it would completely negate [the prosecution expert's] concluding theory ... leaving only the theory of bolus injection just prior to Jackson's death," appellate attorney Valerie Wass wrote in a filing.</P><P>This is the third time Murray's lawyers have attempted to launch an appeal on these grounds after they argued that they did not fully comprehend the need to test the residue until the testimony of a prosecution expert near the end of the seven-week trial. During the trial, judge Michael Pastor refused a motion for further analysis shortly after the verdict; a second request was also denied.</P><P>Murray, 58, received a four-year sentence but is not expected to serve more than two years in county jail.</P>

<P>PETA's youth division, peta2, is giving props to celebs like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> and "Glee" star Lea Michele at this year's <a href="http://features.peta2.com/libby-awards-2011/?utm_campaign=1211%20Libbys%20Nominees%20Press%20Pitches&utm_source=peta2%20Pitch&utm_medium=Media#PeopleAndMusic" target="_blank">Libby Awards</a> for their efforts in support of animal rights.</P><P>The Biebs, who appeared in a <a href="/news/articles/1656302/justin-bieber-peta-ad.jhtml">campaign</a> for the organization at the top of the year using Bieber-fied catch-phrases like "My world includes passion for animals, yours should too" and "Animals can make u smile. Adopt from your local shelter," is taking on fellow animal-loving pop star Ke$ha and rappers k-os and Waka Flocka Flame in the Most Animal-Friendly Pop/Hip-Hop Artist category. Ke$ha appeared in an ad campaigning against the slaughter of Canadian seals.</P><P>Michele, who speaks out against the mistreatment of carriage horses in New York City, faces off against "Jackass" star Steve-O, Cobra Starship's leading man and peta2's Sexiest Vegetarian Gabe Saporta, and "Victorious" star Daniella Monet in the Top Animal-Friendly Celebrity category.</P><P>The Ready Set, Tokio Hotel, Hellogoodbye and the Swellers are all up for Most Animal-Friendly Band. Ke$ha and Tokio are also up for Best peta2 ad along with Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Yelle.</P><P>The Libby (as in "Liberation") Awards will be decided on January 17 by fan votes as well as peta2. Voting ends December 23.</P><P>"Our nominees have all worked hard to shine their spotlights on a variety of important animal issues," peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg said about the nominees, which honors animal-friendly people and products. "As our accomplished stars demonstrate, compassion isn't just a virtue — it's also a road to success."</P>

According to a new report from Hollywood Life and their sources, Twilight Saga main stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have reportedly sought out couples counseling to help deal with the severe trust issues that have developed as a result of Kristen sticking her tongue down Rupert Sanders' throat. <P><MTVNLINK type="artist" id="502642">Eminem</MTVNLINK> has devoted most of his studio time over the past few weeks to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1691665/slaughterhouse-eminem-welcome-to-our-house.jhtml">helping Slaughterhouse</a> complete their Shady Records debut <i>Welcome to: Our House</i>, but Marshall recently confirmed — to the delight of fans — that he's started to work on his eighth solo album, and Royce Da 5'9" wouldn't be surprised if his boss has already banked more than a few records.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Slaughterhouse Learn How To Craft Albums From Eminem" id="vid:825611" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"I've actually kinda just started. I've been on the move a little bit too, so in between things, I sneak songs in here and there," <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1691550/eminem-new-album-recovery.jhtml">Em revealed during a recent interview</a> with Slaughterhouse. "We actually just finished the [Slaughterhouse] album last week ... Now I've got time to be able to start doing things for my own project."</P><P>But despite Em's claims to be in the early stages of recording, Slaughterhouse's Royce Da 5'9" is confident that at the pace he works, Shady might already have a sizeable catalog at his fingertips.</P><P>"Marshall is the type that never really stops recording, so when you get in the studio he's in the back room where the booth is and the door is locked," Royce said on the set of Slaughterhouse's "Throw it Away" video, where Em made a cameo. "Nobody's allowed back there, nobody ever knows what he's doing. All I know is that he's constantly working, so if he told me that he had an album ready right now, I would believe him because he's like a work horse. He works every day."</P><P>During his studio time with Slaughterhouse, Eminem admitted that he's been using "all of Dre's little tricks, I've stolen over the years" to perfect songs, and that should translate into a memorable body of work. Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington disappeared after a Metallica show last October.

<P>Police in Charlottesville, Virginia, said on Tuesday that they believe the skeletal remains found on a Virginia farm could be those of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing on October 17 after <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2009/10/27/morgan-harrington-metallica-search/">attending a Metallica concert</a> in the area.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:476293" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26id%3D1623899%26vid%3D476293" wmode="transparent" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>According to <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-01-26-Va-Tech_N.htm" target="_blank"><i>The Associated Press,</i></a> state Police Superintendent Steve Flaherty ordered an autopsy on the remains to confirm that they are those of Harrington, a Roanoke native who got separated from her friends after leaving the metal show and being denied re-entry to the venue. "We can't say with 100 percent certainty, however, there were significant items and evidence," Flaherty told reporters of what lead authorities to conclude the remains were Harrington's. Investigators would not say what the items were and did not speculate on what might have caused the college student's death. Autopsy results were expected on Wednesday.</P><P>The remains were found in a remote location on Tuesday morning by farmer David Bass while surveying his 700-acre property, which is about 10 miles from the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, where the Metallica concert took place. Flaherty said officials had not searched the farm before because there was no evidence that would have led them to it.</P><P>Harrington was last seen wearing a black Pantera T-shirt, a black mini-skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots. Her purse and cell phone were found by a passerby in a small parking lot between the arena and an athletic field.</P><P>After she was reported missing, hundreds of volunteers and police searched the surrounding area and officials received hundreds of tips. More than $150,000 in rewards were offered for information on her whereabouts, including $50,000 contributed by Metallica. Billboards and posters with her picture went up all around Virginia, and her family created a Web site to help in the search.</P><P>Once the remains are identified, police will likely begin a homicide investigation, which could lead to more information on how Harrington ended up in the field.</P><P>Virginia Tech President Charles Steger released an open letter about the incident on Tuesday. "For more than three months, the entire Virginia Tech community, along with thousands upon thousands around the world, has held out hope for the safe return of Morgan Harrington," he said. "Sadly, today's news from Albemarle County has put an end to that hope, and once again, we find our strength and resilience tested in the face of profound grief and loss."</P>

'The Voice' judge calls Spears 'a pro' in new interview.

Now, they find themselves on rival singing competition shows. But if you expect the claws to come out, these days Aguilera is keeping hers firmly retracted.</P><P>"I'm not down with [pitting women against women] at this point of my life," "The Voice" judge told <a href="http://www.parade.com/celebrity/news/2012/08/13-the-voice-christina-aguilera-on-britney-spears-x-factor.html" target="_blank">Parade.com</a> about Spears' spot on the "X Factor." "I have no patience for it, so I'm like, 'the more the merrier.' The show's third season, kicking off on September 10, will now include "battle rounds" and a "knockout round." As for "X Factor," Spears will start her run on the show beginning just days later on September 12.</P><P>Speaking of Aguilera's <i>other</i> career, the rumor is she is slated to drop her Max Martin-produced single sometime this month. It is the lead single off her highly anticipated follow-up to 2010 album, <i>Bionic.</i></P>
