Skrillex, Foster The People Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind around the corner, today's biggest acts recall 1991's other classic albums.
By James Montgomery

In a few short weeks, Nirvana's epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media — and understandably so. After all, it was a game-changer in every sense of the term, the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you'll see no shortage of stories that do just that.

While Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there were no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 — from mega-platinum rock blockbusters to best-kept indie secrets, and just about everything in between — classics that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we've asked some of today's biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year. On Wednesday, we heard from Death Cab for Cutie and Blink-182; now, Skrillex and Foster the People share their faves.

Don't worry, we'll give Nevermind its due — but right now, we're paying tribute to 1991's other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans.

Metallica, The Black Album

The one where "old" Metallica ended and "new" Metallica began — at least according to the die-hards — the band's fifth studio album (it's technically self-titled, though, come on, who doesn't call it The Black Album?) saw them drifting away from their slash-and-burn thrash-metal past into a new, decidedly fuller phase, one fleshed out with orchestral flourishes and an increased focus on the booming rhythm section of Jason Newstead and Lars Ulrich. Though its recording was plagued by battles with producer Bob Rock, The Black Album features the band's most iconic songs — "Enter Sandman," "The Unforgiven," "Nothing Else Matters," etc. — and remains their best-selling to date, moving a staggering 22 million copies worldwide. Love it or hate it, you can't deny its impact, both on the band and the next two decades of hard rock.

As Remembered by Skrillex: "Man, The Black Album was me sitting in my room when I was 9 years old, trying to learn all the songs on guitar. That was, for me, rocking out, no reservations, like I was on the stage. And learning the 'Holier Than Thou' riff was, like, the biggest achievement, because it's so hard. Every record on that album is so amazing. ... Obviously, 'Enter Sandman,' 'Wherever I May Roam' ... that was the first Metallica song I learned, after 'Enter Sandman.' I love The Black Album. It's perfect; it's a masterpiece in every way, from front to back, and it's inspired me, consciously or subconsciously, because I had such a connection to it."

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik

One of the most important, celebrated albums of the '90s alt-rock explosion, Blood Sugar saw the Chili Peppers grow up, get deep and, of course, become hugely famous. While songs like "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss" still bobbed and weaved with the band's visceral energy, it was on tracks like the massive "Under the Bridge" and "Breaking the Girl" where they slowed things down and found their biggest commercial successes. Recorded by producer Rick Rubin in a supposedly haunted mansion in Laurel Canyon, its creation has become the stuff of rock legend, and though the Peppers would subsequently sag beneath its success (guitarist John Frusciante, unable to cope with his sudden fame, quit the band mid-tour), Blood Sugar still stands as perhaps the finest accomplishment of their 28-year career. It would be nearly four years before they released a follow-up, though, given the album's hugely influential status, you really couldn't blame them.

As Remembered by Mark Pontius, Foster the People: "My favorite record of 1991, and I think the only reason I got this record was my sister had it, and she's older than me, so it just sort of fell into my lap, is Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I think I have to credit that record [for teaching me] a lot of my drumming skills. I loved playing their records, and that one always stuck out to me. It had so much grit, and that was rock and roll at that time of my life."

What is your favorite 1991 rock album? Let us know in the comments below!

For more on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, head over to the Newsroom blog, where Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis tells us his favorite memories of making the iconic album!

John Mayer Says He Left Twitter For 'Art'

'Those who decide to remain offline will make better work than those online,' singer writes in his blog.
By Jocelyn Vena

John Mayer was one of the most epic tweeters of his generation. And then one day last month, much like Miley Cyrus before him, Mayer quit Twitter. And while he may have lost more than 3 million followers in the process, the singer-guitarist explains via a new post on his blog that it's the best choice he could make for the sake of his art.

"A lot of you are wondering why I decided to quit Twitter. And I'm ready to explain it to you now that I'm off Twitter and can explain anything in a salient manner," he writes. "It occurred to me that since the invocation of Twitter, nobody who has participated in it has created any lasting art. And yes! Yours truly is included in that roundup as well. Let me make sure that statement is as absolute and irrevocable as possible by buzzing your tower one more time: no artwork created by someone with a healthy grasp of social media thus far has proven to be anything other than disposable."

Mayer also suggests that there's a reason some of the greatest thinkers of the day aren't on Twitter and similar sites. "Has any artist, since they've begun to give you daily insights into their life created their best work yet? Are the best writers of our time on Twitter?" he asks. "You rip Tina Fey for s---ting on the construct but she's busy penning the best show on television. Aaron Sorkin says he's never used Facebook, a statement that the guardians of the Internet are up [in] arms over, yet he makes an artistic contribution that the media sites are talking about so much that they've developed that gross white stuff at the corners of their mouths. (What is that stuff?)

"Those who decide to remain offline will make better work than those online," Mayer continues. "Why? Because great ideas have to gather. They have to pass the test of withstanding thirteen different moods, four different months and sixty different edits. Anything less is day trading. You can either get a bunch of mentions now or change someone's life next year."

Mayer is quick to point out, however, that he doesn't hate the site. "I'm not knocking Twitter for those who are trying to make a name for themselves," he writes. "Some people need all the RTs they can get today. But for those who have already established themselves it's a slow erosion of the artistic notion."

Last fall, Mayer told MTV News that it would take a lot to get him to quit what he termed "The Hate-rix," while adding that he totally would understand why someone like Cyrus would make that decision.

"I call it that because it's not really happening. It's just this fake world of people criticizing other people," he laughed. "It's a shame, but look, that's what it comes down to in America. Miley is somebody who's made a bunch of money doing something she loves. Most people do things they hate, for less money. If somebody can repurpose something that somebody loves doing for a lot of money, in order to make a little bit of that money, they're gonna do it.

"So nobody hates Miley Cyrus; they're just picking up on her brand, repurposing it, to try to make a little bit of Miley cash," he continued. "It's damaging people's minds. Imagine Shannen Doherty with a Twitter account, back in the '90210' days. That would've just flat-out killed her."

Oh, There You Are Persia White...

We haven't really seen Persia White since her earthy boho days as Lynn on "Girlfriend." But with a role on CW's "Vampire Diaries," chick has been out promoting more than usual.

Check out the pretty gal inside hitting up "The Wendy Williams Show"...

The 39-year old actress, who also has a teen daughter named Mecca, was spotted arriving at "The Wendy Williams Show" in NYC yesterday. Persia rocked a cute black dress with eyelet detail, and still looks fab these days:

She tweeted pics with both Wendy & today's other guest, Charlie Sheen, saying, "Back stage with Charlie Sheen on the Wendy Williams show today. Charlie is such a beautiful and charming man!"

Persia plays "Abby Bennet Wilson" (Bonnie/Kat Graham's mother) on season 3 of CW's "The Vampire Diaries."

Check out Persia discussing her "The Vampire Diaries" role (we'll update with her Wendy Show appearance once it hits the net):

Heavy D 'Brought So Much Light,' Mary J. Blige Says

'Every song Heavy D ever put out was something to uplift us,' former labelmate tells MTV News about her fallen friend.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Mary J. Bilge famously sang "Not Gon' Cry" on her 1996 single, but when the topic of her fallen friend and former Uptown Records labelmate Heavy D came up, the emotion was just too much to hold back.

<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Mary J. "And he just brought so much light."

Mary, like Heavy, hailed from the outskirts of New York City — him from Mount Vernon, her from Yonkers. It was 1987 when Heavy D & the Boyz released their first album, Living Large, on Uptown Records. Mary was signed years later, and in 1992, dropped her debut album, What's the 411? — but her earliest memories of Heavy pre-date her days in the music industry.

"I just remember being a child and him coming to King school, where they used to have all the performers come, and they came and did 'The Overweight Lover,' " Mary recalled with tears in her eyes. "We always needed something to uplift us, and he brought us so much joy because we were always in a place where we didn't have enough, we couldn't get enough money, but the King school show was free, and every song Heavy D ever put out was something to uplift us."

The exact cause of Heavy D's death November 8 is still unclear, as initial autopsy results came up inconclusive. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills after a 911 call was placed from his home. Heavy had difficulty breathing and was pronounced dead after he reached the hospital.

There will be a public viewing for the fallen rapper Thursday (November 17) at Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York, and a private funeral service for family and close friends Friday. BET is planning a special tribute to Heavy D during the Soul Train Awards on November 27. Rappers Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow, Naughty by Nature, Whodini and Stetsasonic's Daddy-O are all expected to take part.

Share your fondest memory of Heavy D in the comments.

Mary J. Blige, Jessie J On What Makes A 'VH1 Diva'

'For me to be a part of it in any way is incredible,' Jessi J tells MTV News before show, airing tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORK — On Sunday night, some of the music industry's biggest divas gathered at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan to pay tribute to some of the most-soulful divas in the biz for "VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul." Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J and Jill Scott all put their new-millennium spin on classics from cities like Detroit, Chicago, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee.

"I don't even know what a diva is," Dolly Parton told MTV News on the red carpet before the big show kicked off. "I think it's someone that's strong in their beliefs, strong in their own talent, strong in who they are. ... I see a lot of divas around here, and some say I am one, and I don't know if that's true or not," she joked. "Do you think I'm a diva?"

Jessie J waxed poetic about the title "diva." "Sometimes the media can completely misunderstand what the word 'diva' means," she said. "To me, tonight is what it's about, and every single person's that been here that's had longevity, passion, consistent, amazing music that goes around the globe. For me to be a part of it in any way is incredible."

The show recalled some of the greatest hits from divas present, past and future. And it even took time to fondly remember the late Amy Winehouse, whose own music was so deeply inspired by soul music of days past.

"She's in a class by herself," Mary J. Blige said. "She just broke the mold when she came out; it was like, 'Wow, who is this?' And I could hear all of the pain before I even knew she had pain."

While every diva at the show, which airs Monday night (December 19) on VH1, has played a pivotal role in pop music, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy doesn't believe that many will be as influential as Winehouse. "I don't think there's gonna be another voice that cut through the way her voice cut through," he said. "And I think that alone makes her a legend."

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, one of the performers during the tribute, summed up Winehouse: "She was the most incredible artist, and I feel kind of overwhelmed to be doing it," she said. She later took the stage with Nas, Wanda Jackson and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings to remember Winehouse's catalogue of music.

"VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul" airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1.

Rihanna Raises A Glass To Fans In 'Cheers' Video

Avril Lavigne cameos in montage of celebrations off- and onstage.
By James Dinh

Summer is coming to a close, but it looks like Rihanna is going to keep the party going for a little longer. On Friday (August 26), the pop force debuted the video for her celebratory tune "Cheers (Drink to That)," a behind-the-scenes concert montage with brief cameo appearances by Avril Lavigne, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Chanting fans kick off the almost-five minute clip, which cuts between candid footage of the songstress backstage before and after her shows, and enjoying the festivities during her recent trip to Barbados. Rocking some denim blue shorts, a colorful cropped top and sunglasses, Rihanna also gives fans a glimpse of her performance of the tune during her Loud tour set. "Cheers (Drink to That)" samples Avril Lavigne's yodel from her 2002 hit "I'm With You," so it's only appropriate that the visual includes sporadic blink-of-the-eye appearances from the pop rocker horsing around by the pool.

"It was really exciting because 'I'm With You' is one of my favorite songs that I've done, I always love performing it," Lavigne said last year of being sampled on "Cheers."

"Cheers to the freaking weekend/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Oh, let the Jameson sink in/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Don't let the bastards get you down/ Turn it around with another round/ There's a party at the bar everybody put your glasses up and I drink to that," Rihanna sings, almost casually, as she's seen toasting fans and friends onstage and in bars.

Hours after the debut, Rih took to Twitter to ask fans what they thought about the clip, writing, "CHEERS... U like??? #drinktothat #RihannaNavy I love yall forever!!!!! Keep making me proud!"

The Rihanna Navy has been pushing for the singer to release "Cheers (Drink to That)" since the LP's release, and there's no denying that the Barbados beauty also has love for the song. "I love that song ['Cheers']. That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating," Rihanna told MTV News last year. "It gives you a great feeling inside, like you want to go out and have a drink. ... People can't wait for the weekend."

Beyonce's Night Out: Breaking Down Her 'Tasteful' Look

Fashion expert weighs in on B's post-baby style during a President Obama fundraiser.
By Jocelyn Vena

All the single ladies: Put your hands up and show Beyoncé some love for looking so smoking hot just 10 weeks after giving birth to her baby girl, Blue Ivy.

After multiple sightings of the star out and about in NYC since she first emerged at a Jay-Z's post-Carnegie Hall party, the singer got all dolled up to hang out with first lady Michelle Obama in Manhattan on Monday night.

The first lady of hip-hop and the actual first lady gathered at the Greenwich Hotel for a fundraising event for President Obama. Along with raising some dough, Beyoncé also raised eyebrows, thanks to her slamming post-baby body. Decked out in a body-hugging navy dress by Victoria Beckham, B rocked sky-high heels, dazzling bling (including a diamond-encrusted eagle) and her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail. So what was Beyoncé doing right in terms of styling herself as a new mom?

"When you think of all the things women dislike about themselves, the majority don't like their upper arms and also have skirt-length issues, so she's addressed both of these. It's an interesting choice because it's snug, not tight," celebrity stylist Robert Verdi told MTV News about B's post-baby style. "There's a distinction. It's body-flattering, for sure.

"It's also a very tasteful length: 2 inches above the knee. It's also a very conservative color, and it's very covered, but it still remains very sexy," he continued about the look. "You don't see all the bumps that women have post-pregnancy. ... Again, the distinction is it's body-conscious without revealing every lump and bump. Tight ain't right, but this ain't tight. This is body-skimming."

With Beyoncé heading back into the spotlight more and more, including a set of shows planned for Memorial Day weekend, does Verdi think Queen B will reassess her stage style now that she's a mom?

"She's really young, and ... her equity is in her sex appeal, so you can't dismiss that," Verdi said. "She's not going to cover up. I think you've seen a similar evolution with Madonna, where fashion is sexy but is more intellectual. It's not as in-your-face. I think you're going to see the same thing with her. You evolve, but I don't think you stop being an attractive woman because you've had a child."

What do you think of B's post-baby style? Let us know in the comments!

Adele's Impressive Run At #1: Just The Facts

Singer's 21 will bump down a notch next week to make room for Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball.
By Gil Kaufman

Adele got so comfortable sitting in the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart during the first 10 weeks of 2012 that we started to forget anyone else could knock her off the perch. But after 23 non-consecutive weeks in the pole position dating back to last year and a board-running sprint for every chart week of the year so far, her good thing will come to an end next week when Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball edges her out of the top position.

Sure, she came in at just 1,300 copies below the Boss at #2, and there's a good chance she'll be back in the hunt for #1 in the near future, but with a pause in the action, now is as good a time as any to take another look at her incredible run.

Some 21 facts:

» Her 23 non-consecutive weeks at #1 put Adele just one week short of the chart domination of two classic soundtracks: Prince's Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever.

» Though she'll have to start over now, Adele was closing in on another all-time chart record: the most consecutive weeks at #1 by an album by a female solo act. That record still belongs to Carole King's Tapestry, which did it back in 1971 by running the board for 15 weeks. (Whitney Houston's "Bodyguard" soundtrack actually stayed in the #1 slot for 20 consecutive weeks, but that was not strictly a solo album.)

» Adele absolutely destroyed the record for the biggest post-Grammy sales boost in history when 21 moved 733,000 copies the week after she took home her six-pack of statues in February.

» The last album to hold the #1 spot before Springsteen took it was Michael Bublé's Christmas, which edged out Adele during the week ending December 25. So far, she's sold more than 8 million copies of 21, including more than 2 million in 2012 alone.

» During the course of her 55-week run on the charts, Adele has only fallen out of the top five once. In fact, she's been in the #1 or #2 spot in all but 17 of those weeks.

Madonna Advises Adele To Keep Her 'Integrity'

Madge also recalls being 'extremely envious' of Whitney Houston in new interview.
By Jocelyn Vena

<a

href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna has defied the laws of pop music, sustaining her career decades after it kicked off. And it seems her sensible attitude in part explains her longevity.

In an <a href="http://www.pressparty.com/pg/newsdesk/madonna/view/42344/"

target="_blank">interview with The Sun, when asked about the criticism Adele received from designer Karl Lagerfeld, she had these wise words.

"That's horrible. That's ridiculous, that's just the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I don't like it when anybody says anything bad about anyone — I don't like it. Adele's a great talent and how much she weighs has nothing to do with it," she said. "The thing for Adele to remember is at the end of the day, whether you rise or fall, it has so much to do with how you sustain yourself and keep your integrity and your inner strength."

Her last bit of advice seems relevant not only to living pop stars, but also to two pop stars we lost in the last year. "It is all about who you surround yourself with — friends and people who really do care about you, and care about your well-being beyond being a superstar. That's the most important thing," she said, later addressing the losses of Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston.

"One thing I was struck by with Whitney Houston is I remember she sort of came out as a singer around the same time I did," Madonna <a href="http://www.pressparty.com/pg/newsdesk/madonna/view/42348/"

target="_blank">added. "I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, 'Oh my God. She's such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.' I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence."

Madonna is now focused on the upcoming release of her album MDNA, and she said, "I hope I inspire women and give them strength to deal with life no matter what comes their way."

Adele Passes Pink Floyd On List Of Best-Selling British Albums

21 has moved past Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon to take #7 spot on the list.
By Gil Kaufman

Adele just keeps rolling up records. The singer's sophomore album, 21, may finally have lost its perch at the top of the U.S. albums chart, but its continued strong sales in England have helped catapult it above one of the all-time greats on the list of the U.K.'s best-selling albums in history.

According to the Official Charts Company, after recently moving ahead of Michael Jackson's Bad, Adele scooted up another notch on the U.K. list when 21 jumped up to #7, passing Pink Floyd's 1973 prog rock masterpiece, The Dark Side of the Moon. To date, 21 has sold 4.14 million copies in the U.K., putting it within spitting distance of the #6 album, Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, which is just 12,000 copies ahead. Adele is moving units so fast that the Official Charts Company speculated that she could overtake Straits by week's end.

At that point, though, she could run into some trouble challenging the top five sellers, which have remained virtually untouchable for more than a decade. Queen's Greatest Hits, which has sold 5.83 million, is #1 on the list, with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band just behind at #2 with sales of 5.04 million. At #3 is Abba's Gold (4.99 million), followed by Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (4.52 million) and Jackson's Thriller (4.27 million).

NME reported that Adele's 21 and her debut, 19, also helped British artists snag their biggest share of U.S. album sales in a decade. With combined sales of more than 6.65 million, Adele, along with Mumford and Sons (1.4 million) and several others helped account for an 11.7 percent share of all albums sold in the U.S. in 2011. Also helping to goose that figure were albums by Coldplay and Florence and the Machine.

Avril Lavigne Says 'Wish You Were Here' Single 'Feels Right'

Song about missing someone 'represents the album' well, singer says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Avril Lavigne lets her guard down on her Goodbye Lullaby single "Wish You Were Here." The poignant track is about pining away for that one person you let slip away. The emotional pull of the track, produced by Max Martin and Shellback, is the perfect tune for anyone who's not able to be with the ones they love this holiday season.

"I'm excited about 'Wish You Were Here' being the single because it's a ballad and the song kind of represents the album definitely more so than the first single," she told MTV News about the song, which she performed during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade last week. "That was kind of more my older stuff and more pop rock and aggressive and a lighter subject. Goodbye Lullaby, for me, was a record that I was writing for myself."

"Wish You Were Here" and its simple, Dave Meyers-directed video really sum up the album for Lavigne. "It was more raw and stripped-down and more emotional and I wasn't holding back," she said of working on the album. "[It's] sort of more song driven and the production was mainly just like a lot of acoustic guitars and loops and just all about the vocal; the vocal being clear and having an honest emotion to it. And saying that, yeah, the first two singles ['What the Hell' and 'Smile'] were more pop rock, and so now finally with this one, 'Wish You Were Here,' being released, it feels right."

The song comes from a place deep inside and is very much about someone in Lavigne's life. "I love this song. I like this song because I wrote it about missing somebody and that's something that we all go through at some point in our lives," she explained. "It's just about looking back and remembering all those good times you shared with somebody, all the crazy moments. And that's life. We all experience that at some point, but it has a positive message."

Eminem Inducts Run-DMC Into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame With Poetic Tribute

'Two turntables and a microphone, that's all it took to change the world,' Em says of his heroes.
By Gil Kaufman

On the night when Run-DMC became only the second hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it was fitting that the group that blazed the trail between rock and rap in the 1980s was invited into the rarified club by a hip-hop icon of the modern era whose career is built on their bedrock: Eminem.

His sartorial style inspired by his heroes, from the black leather jacket, shirt and pants, to the black fedora tilted on his head, Eminem bounded onto the stage with a pimping swagger and crossed his arms in a Run-DMC style as he leaned into the microphone.

"Two turntables and a microphone, that's all it took to change the world," the reclusive Detroit MC began. "Three kings from Queens made rap music in the b-boy stance a global phenomenon," he said of the group's members, rappers Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and late DJ Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell. (Head to the MTV Newsroom to read the e-mail JMJ's close friend Eric "Shake" James sent to MTV News while he witnessed the ceremony.)

After the first time he heard the group's "hard beats and bold rhymes," at age 11, Eminem recalled that "something about the big drums and the strong raps that grabbed hold of my ears and changed my life." Clearly humbled by the honor, Slim Shady's speech had a lyrical groove as he added, "Something fresh, something tough. Something dangerous. Something beautiful and something unique. Two turntables and a microphone," staring out at the crowd and rubbing his hands together as if savoring the treat of setting up his heroes for the glory they so richly deserve.

Recalling how their 1985 video for "King of Rock" had them crashing a fictional Rock and Roll Museum and being told they didn't belong in such a museum, Eminem said, "And 25 years later, man, here we are. They didn't take no for an answer, much the same way as they didn't give up when much of the world refused to recognize rap as real music. They were the first rock stars of rap. They were the first movie stars of rap. They were the first rap group played on MTV. ... They were the baddest of the bad, the coolest of the cool. Two turntables and a microphone."

Em talked about not knowing what he wanted to do in life while growing up in Detroit and then hearing Run-DMC and realizing "that you could write your own rules, which is something that still inspires me, as well as every rap other artist, constantly." And then the crowd finally caught on to the rhythm of Slim's callback refrain and repeated along with him, "Two turntables and a microphone."

"I remember being in ninth grade when Raising Hell came out," he recalled, and wryly added, "Two years later, I still remember being in ninth grade when Tougher Than Leather came out. I had skipped school, if you can believe that, to go buy Tougher Than Leather on cassette the day it came out. As soon as I heard 'Run's House,' man, it was pretty much a rap for me. Marshall Mathers became Eminem. It was the first time Run-DMC had changed my life, but it wouldn't be the last. Two turntables and a microphone."

Bringing the group's indelible career into the present, Em paid tribute to late DJ Mizell's mentorship of Slim's protégé, 50 Cent. "Jay shaped the way 50 wrote, the way he rapped and the way he thought," Em said of Fif, whose early works were overseen by Mizell. "Again, Run-DMC changed my life. Without them I wouldn't have met one of my closest friends."

Eminem closed by saying that the group's impact can be felt everywhere. Echoing one of the group's most famous couplets from "King of Rock," Em concluded, "There's three of them, and if you grew up on hip-hop like I did, they are the Beatles."

With their friends and family surrounding them onstage, Rev Run first thanked Mizell's mother for always allowing the young trio to practice at her home and never asking them to turn down the volume. He also thanked his brother, hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, who convinced the group to change their name from the Sure Shot Three and to mash rock with their rap.

Paying touching homage to his adoptive parents, DMC urged the crowd to give love to foster children. "If my birth mother never gave me up, my real mother would have never came and got me," he said, hitting on one of the topics that has become his abiding passion since the group broke up in 2002 following Jay's still unsolved murder. "There would be no Run-DMC; there would be no rap music the way it is today. ... But forget about all that celebrity stuff, y'all. This little boy, Darryl McDaniels, wouldn't be standing here tonight telling y'all that. The best thing y'all can do is give love to a kid, because that kid may grow up and be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame one day."

Mizell's mother, Connie Mizell, also reminisced lovingly about how her late son tore up every one of her turntables learning how to scratch, and she didn't mind. And how "the boys" would be tearing it up in the next room as she studied in the adjoining room, and she didn't mind. "Nothing happens before time," she said. "It wasn't time when Jason was living. It was time after he'd gone. Because you see the blessings is still going on. He is not forgotten."

The group did not perform at the ceremony, in keeping with their pledge not to play live again following Mizell's death.

Justin Bieber Channels Justin Timberlake On 'Boyfriend'

Lead Believe single dropped at midnight on Monday.
By Jocelyn Vena

Tween dream swagger is all over Justin Bieber's lead Believe single, "Boyfriend." Taking several cues from Justin Timberlake's early post-'NSYNC work, the track amps up Bieber's credibility as a teen idol and remixes it with the type of production work longtime pop music fans can appreciate.

Lyrically, it sounds a bit silly at times (like when Bieber proposes he and his girl eat fondue by the fire), but Bieber's delivery of the lines proves that at 18, he's willing to take the steps to move forward in the world of pop. Sometimes it seems a little too similar to the way the other Justin delivers lines, but "Boyfriend," co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, is light-years beyond the sugary sweet "Baby."

The song opens pretty sparsely, with just a thumping beat, a "woo" noise and Bieber's sing-songy rap, before a guitar comes in as Bieber makes his plea to win a girl over. The chorus will have girls dancing around thanks to its bumping beat and chugging R&B-influenced instrumentation. He sings, "I could be a gentleman/ Everything you want/ If I was your boyfriend/ I'd never let you go/ I'd never let you go," before rapping, "Tell me what you like."

Bieber uses some form of the word "swag" no fewer than four times on the track, including the somewhat perplexing line, "Swag, swag, swag on you." But regardless of what Bieber detractors might have to say, his Beliebers, who have aged right along with their idol, will appreciate his more grown-up sound on the record.

The song officially dropped at midnight on Monday. Believe will be released later this year. As for the video, his manager, Scooter Braun, tweeted that it's already in the works.

Do you like the more grown-up Bieber on "Boyfriend"? Leave your comment below!
